Helme Edge Vineyard began as a gardening hobby, in our case on a steep west-facing slope behind the family home at Helme Edge Farm.
Our principle grape is Solaris, a white variety developed in Germany. It is a member of a larger group of vines called PIWIS, an abbreviation of the German for ‘fungus resistant’. The planting of PIWIS allows a significant reduction in the usage of pesticides, protecting the environment and making a major contribution to our vineyard sustainability. Our Solaris ripened well and made good wine in the early years, encouraging successive plantings. We have extended our vineyard with further plantings of other PIWI grape varieties; Cabernet Cortis and Rondo (both red).
