After months of nurturing our vines through pruning, training and careful vineyard management, the moment has finally arrived. The 2026 grape harvest is underway at Helme Edge Vineyard, with our Solaris grapes reaching optimum ripeness.

Harvest is the high point of the viticulture year, when all the work carried out in our Yorkshire vineyard finally comes to fruition in bunches of ripe grapes ready to be transformed into wine.

An Exceptional Growing Season in Yorkshire

The weather has been especially kind throughout the 2026 growing season. We escaped troublesome late frosts, while long spells of warm and very warm weather pushed the vines several weeks ahead of their normal development.

The summer drought proved challenging for some UK vineyards, particularly those growing on lighter, sandy soils where irrigation was sometimes required. At Helme Edge Vineyard, our water-retentive clay subsoil proved particularly valuable. It provided a natural reservoir of moisture that could be reached by the deep roots of our mature vines, helping the grapes continue to develop during the prolonged dry weather.

Waiting for the Perfect Time to Harvest

The days leading up to the grape harvest always bring a certain amount of nervousness. After nurturing the vines for an entire growing season, there is still plenty that can go wrong before the grapes are safely picked.

Adverse weather is an obvious concern, but we also have to contend with grape-hungry birds, sugar-loving wasps and the occasional marauding roe deer. Fungal disease can also become a greater risk as the grapes ripen and their sugar levels increase.

Fortunately, none of these potential hazards caused us significant problems this year and we were rewarded with a good yield of clean, ripe Solaris grapes.

The 2026 crop was significantly larger than our 2025 harvest because many more of our vines have now reached maturity and produced their first substantial crop.

40 Pickers and One Yorkshire Grape Harvest

For harvest day we assembled a team of around 40 pickers, who quickly got to work filling crates with bunches of ripe Solaris grapes.

Most of our harvest team were family and friends, joined by some of our frequent vineyard visitors who had volunteered to experience grape picking for themselves. With so many willing hands, the harvest was completed by 1.15pm, leaving everyone free to enjoy a well-earned lunch accompanied by Helme Edge wine at the vineyard house.

It is one of those special days when the family, friends and visitors who have supported our Yorkshire vineyard can come together and play a direct part in producing the next vintage.

From Yorkshire Grapes to Solaris Wine

With the picking complete, the grapes were loaded into a large van ready for their journey to our winemaker at Halfpenny Green near Wolverhampton the following morning.

There, our Yorkshire-grown Solaris grapes will be vinified to create our 2026 still Solaris wine, completing another important stage in the journey from vine to bottle.

For our family-run vineyard, harvest is always a satisfying moment. Months of work among the vines have been captured in those crates of ripe grapes, and now we wait to discover what character the exceptional 2026 growing season will bring to our next Helme Edge Solaris.

Silver Medal Success for Our Yorkshire Rose

We are delighted to have another award-winning Yorkshire wine to add to the collection at Helme Edge Vineyard, after our Cabernet Cortis rosé was awarded a Silver Medal at the 2026 WineGB Midlands & North Wine Challenge.

As a small, family-run vineyard in Yorkshire, producing wines that can stand alongside those from established vineyards across the Midlands and North is something we are particularly proud of. Our latest award follows the Silver Medal achieved by our 2023 Sparkling Solaris and provides further recognition for the quality of wine being produced from our Yorkshire-grown grapes.

The WineGB Midlands and North Challenge

WineGB is the national trade association for the UK wine industry, representing vineyards and wine producers and supporting the continued development of English and Welsh wine. Helme Edge Vineyard is part of the WineGB Midlands & North region, which includes vineyards throughout Yorkshire as well as producers across a large part of northern and central England.

An important event in the regional calendar is the annual WineGB Midlands & North Wine Challenge. The 2026 competition was held at the impressive Carlton Towers in Yorkshire and attracted more than 130 wines from vineyards across the region. Each wine was independently assessed by a panel of experienced wine judges, with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals awarded according to quality.

A Silver Medal for our Cabernet Cortis Rose!

We were thrilled to discover that our Helme Edge Vineyard Cabernet Cortis Rosé was among the Silver Medal winners.

Cabernet Cortis is an exciting grape variety for English wine production and one that is particularly interesting for vineyards in cooler regions such as Yorkshire. At Helme Edge Vineyard, it has enabled us to produce an attractive rosé that reflects both the grape variety and the distinctive growing conditions of our vineyard.

The Silver Medal is especially rewarding for our family because it follows the success of our 2023 Sparkling Solaris, which also received a Silver Medal. Together, the awards are another encouraging sign of what can be achieved by growing grapes and producing English wine here in Yorkshire.

Most cultures have a foundation story, something that explains where they came from and inspires future generations. Businesses often have them too. One of the most famous is Hewlett-Packard, founded by Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard in a garage in Palo Alto, California, in 1939. That modest garage would later become known as the birthplace of Silicon Valley.

There is even a small Yorkshire connection to the HP story. In the early 1990s, Alan visited the famous site during his professional career as Director of Research at ICI’s Colours Division in Manchester. At the time, he was leading a project to develop the black colour used in HP ink cartridges. Perhaps surprisingly, that colour technology had its origins at ICI’s laboratories in Blackley, Manchester.

On a rather smaller scale, Helme Edge Vineyard has its own foundation story. The origins of our Yorkshire vineyard can be traced to a slope at the bottom of the garden below the house. Originally planted with gorse, the area gradually became invaded by nettles and brambles. In 2017, with Tom still at school, we decided to clear the slope and try something altogether more ambitious: growing wine grapes in Yorkshire.

We initially planted 75 Solaris vines and 25 Phoenix vines, both PIWI fungus-resistant hybrid grape varieties selected for their suitability to the cooler, wetter conditions of the Yorkshire climate. Phoenix produced an elegant vine, but unfortunately its grapes struggled to ripen sufficiently at Helme Edge to produce the quality of wine we wanted. Those vines were eventually replaced with Solaris, a variety that has proved far more successful in our vineyard.

Our first Solaris bunches produced some excellent English wine in 2019, and that success changed everything. What had begun as a small vineyard hobby started to grow into something considerably more serious. During the 2020 lockdown, we planted a further 300 Solaris vines, putting us firmly on the path towards the family-run Yorkshire vineyard and wine business that Helme Edge Vineyard is today.

Now the original little patch of vines has an important place in the history of Helme Edge Vineyard. From the 2026 grape harvest, we plan to create a special reserve cuvée of Solaris wine, produced using grapes from this founding area of the vineyard. It will be a wine with a genuine connection to where our journey began, from an overgrown patch of a Yorkshire garden to a thriving vineyard producing locally grown Yorkshire wine.

And, as the photograph shows, producing those precious grapes requires a little protection. Netting is placed over the vines as harvest approaches to deter our local, sugar-hungry blackbirds, who seem to appreciate a ripe Solaris grape almost as much as we do.

Our Fig Tree & Climate Change

The Helme Edge Vineyard visitor experience begins on the steps leading down to our tasting room, where guests are greeted by a thriving fig tree with a remarkable story. Originally bought in a pot from Morrisons, our Brown Turkey fig tree has produced more than 100 ripe figs each year for the past five years.

Growing successfully at around 320 metres above sea level, with sweeping views across the Pennine landscape, the fig tree provides a striking example of how the changing climate is affecting what can be grown in Yorkshire. For us, its success is a powerful local indicator of climate change in the Pennines and the gradual shift in growing conditions across northern England.

The impact of climate change on English viticulture is even more significant. Warmer temperatures and longer growing seasons now make it possible to grow vines and ripen grapes in areas once considered too cool for commercial wine production. At Helme Edge Vineyard, we grow modern hybrid grape varieties such as Solaris, which has been specially developed to ripen early and offer greater resistance to disease. These qualities make it particularly well suited to a high-altitude Yorkshire vineyard.

Further south, warmer conditions have helped create a major new industry producing English sparkling wine from traditional Champagne grape varieties, including Chardonnay. The glorious summer weather has showcased the breathtaking countryside surrounding Helme Edge Vineyard, making every visit a memorable experience in our beautiful corner of Yorkshire. Set amongst rolling hills with stunning panoramic views, our Yorkshire vineyard offers visitors the perfect opportunity to enjoy English wine, relax in picturesque surroundings, and experience one of the region’s most scenic vineyard tours and wine tastings.

The recent spell of warm weather has also encouraged exceptional vine growth, and Tom is already busy trimming the tops and sides of the vines to maintain the neat, well-managed appearance that reflects our boutique vineyard. This important aspect of vineyard management encourages the vines to focus their energy on producing high-quality wine grapes rather than excessive shoots and foliage. Careful canopy management also improves sunlight penetration and air circulation, helping to reduce humidity and minimise the risk of fungal diseases, ensuring healthy vines throughout the growing season.

Following a successful flowering period, the grape clusters are now swelling beautifully and are well on their way to producing what promises to be an excellent Yorkshire wine vintage. While many vineyards across England are beginning to experience the effects of dry conditions, our water-retentive clay subsoil provides a valuable natural reservoir, supplying moisture to the vine roots during periods of warm weather. This unique feature of our terroir helps us produce premium English wines with grapes that continue to develop steadily throughout the summer.

Our Wonderful Scenery!

One of the most memorable parts of visiting Helme Edge Vineyard is the opportunity to enjoy some of the most spectacular panoramic views in Yorkshire. Surrounded by the beautiful countryside between Huddersfield and Holmfirth, our Yorkshire vineyard offers visitors much more than exceptional English wine. Every vineyard tour and wine tasting is accompanied by breathtaking scenery that changes with the seasons, making every visit a unique experience.

Dominating the southern skyline is West Nab, a striking 591-metre gritstone tor renowned for its dramatic landscape and more than 200 boulder climbing routes. Sweeping northwards, the Pennine ridge falls away towards Deer Hill Reservoir, whose banks can be glimpsed from the vineyard. Built between 1870 and 1875, the reservoir forms part of the water catchment feeding Blackmoorfoot Reservoir, an important source of drinking water for Huddersfield and the surrounding area.

Beyond the reservoirs, the catchment skirts the base of Meltham Cop, a prominent millstone grit hill with archaeological evidence of both Stone Age and Iron Age settlements. This rich landscape of hills, reservoirs and ancient history provides a remarkable backdrop to our vines and is one of the many reasons visitors return to Helme Edge Vineyard time and again.

The scenery often leaves a lasting impression. During a recent hen party wine tasting at the vineyard, the bride-to-be was led blindfolded into our tasting room. When her blindfold was removed and she saw the magnificent Yorkshire landscape stretching before her, she burst into tears, overwhelmed by the beauty of the view. It’s moments like these that remind us why a visit to Helme Edge Vineyard is about far more than great wine. It’s about creating unforgettable experiences in one of the most beautiful vineyard settings in Yorkshire.

While there is much focus on the three generations who run Helme Edge Vineyard: Alan, Fiona and Tom, there is an unsung hero supporting us. Armies march on their stomachs and that applies equally in the wine tasting room where nibbles are provided to accompany the wine.

That hero(ine) is our baker in chief, Jen (Alan’s wife, Fiona’s mum and Tom’s granny). She provides a daily presentation of savoury biscuits to accompany our both our Helme Edge Vineyard Sparkling Solaris and still Solaris. Her range includes Parmesan biscuits, Jeera(with cumin) and a Cheddar & Rice Krispie biscuit. To accompany our Helme Edge Rosé, things turn sweeter.
Her shortbread recipe was handed down from her mother in the north of Scotland and probably her mother before.

However, chocolate brownies are her speciality. They are much admired and our visitors often ask if they can buy them. It’s very flattering but unfortunately Jen is at full capacity!
